COURSE SYLLABUS
ART 1001 Art Fundamentals is a hands-on course in which students will learn the basic techniques of design, drawing, painting, and mixed media art. Students will learn to express ideas visually and become familiar with the basic vocabulary necessary to communicate the creative process and critical thinking. We will learn about the contemporary field of art through lectures, readings, field trips, and gallery visits. No previous experience is expected. This is essentially a course for non-art majors. This is not a Gordon Rule course. The passing grade for all non-Gordon Rule courses is a “D” or better.

PROJECT EVALUATIONS
Your work will be evaluated on the basis of the following criteria of requirements and expectations:
- Fulfillment of project objectives.
- Attention to craftsmanship.
- Spirit of investigation and experimentation.
- Conceptual rigor.
- Material inventiveness.
- Physical investment: the sweat factor
- Overall aesthetic and conceptual quality of the work.
GRADING FORMAT
- EXCELLENT: A Goes beyond all the requirements and expectations
- VERY GOOD: B+ B Meets all the requirements and expectations
- GOOD C+ C Meets most of the requirements and expectations
- POOR: D+ D Meets very few of the reqs. and expectations
- FAIL E F Meets virtually none of the requirements

- A = 90-100%
- B+ = 86-89%
- B = 80-85%
- C+ = 76-79%
- C = 70-75%
- D+ = 66-69%
- D = 60-65%
- F = below 60%
FINAL SEMESTER EVALUATIONS will be averaged as follows:
- Design Hieroglyph 5%
- Drawing ( portfolio of six ) 10%
- Value Painting (value scale, collages) 15%
- Color Mixing ( color wheel, color value scale, color intensity project, atm perspective ) 15%
- Color Painting 20%
- Writing Assignments 10%
- Homework 15%
- Class Participation 10%
- Attendance Grade: SEE DETAILED ATTENDANCE POLICY ABOVE.
CRITICAL DATES are provided with each project description. All projects are due on the due
dates given in the project descriptions. Final critique will be held on the last day of class of
the Fall semester.
POLICIES
All students must abide by EPA and DEP guidelines regarding Hazardous Waste Disposal and Handling. Solvents and other hazardous waste must be disposed of properly and must never be poured down the sink. In addition, any materials that create noxious gas like epoxies or spray paint, must only be applied outside.
The Department of Fine Arts and its faculty assume no responsibility for any materials or projects left
in the classrooms. It is each student’s responsibility to remove all materials and projects from
the classrooms after the course has concluded. If the student needs to make individual arrangements
with the instructor to keep any materials after the class has ended, it is the student’s responsibility
to make these arrangements, with the instructor’s approval. Student grades may be withheld for failure
to do so. Any artwork, supplies, or other materials left in the classroom after the semester has
concluded, without prior specific arrangements with the responsible faculty, will be disposed of.
Turn off your cell phones upon entering the classroom. Absolutely no cell phone use in the classroom. Please retreat to the hallways or outside for emergency calls. Student acknowledges
the cell phone termination policy and accepts destruction by smashing of their cell phone in instances
of repeat offenses.

Aug 26(27)• Introduce elements of design, in class drawing, watch video on Maya, discuss Hieroglyph..
Aug 30(31)• Work on first project, the Hieroglyph, Biographies due.
Sep 1• Work more on Hieroglyph.
Sep 2(3)• Hieroglyph project due, Critique. Blind contour drawing HW: complete 12 blind contour drawings of hands/feet- I want you all to do this in two days, spending 30 mins each day- each drawing should take five minutes. REMEMBER to connect your eye and your pencil, do not look at your paper, let your eye trace the outside edge of the hand/foot you are drawing DUE 9/7(8).
Sep 6• No Class, Labor Day
Sep 7(8)•HW due, 12 blind contour drawings. Discuss L/R Brain... Basics of composing/sketching a scene(how to scale, determine relationships of space/shape). Introduce Project 2 drawing cross-contour.
Sep 9(10)•HW due, 6 cross-contour drawings. Work on Project 2 Drawing Cross-Contour
Sep 13(14)•DUE: HW, 6 modified contour drawings of hands/feet/etc. Discuss value, Value Scale project DUE Sept 16(17). Visit the gallery.
Sep 15• Begin Cross-Hatch Value Drawing/Still Life.
Sep 16(17)• Work on Cross-Hatch Value Drawing/Still Life.
Sep 20(21)•Work on Cross-Hatch Value Drawing/Still Life.
Sep 22• Work on Cross-Hatch Value Drawing/Still Life.
Sep 23(24)•DUE: Cross-Hatch Value Drawing/Still Life
Sep 27(28)•Intro to Texture/Value Portrait study. Bring in a xerox of a photo/portrait(you need to find a photo that is fairly close-up, shoulders and head...Blow this up using a copy machine so that the image fills an 8.5" x 11" paper.
Oct 7(8)•DUE: Texture/Value Portrait study.
Oct 11(12)• Color Theory
Oct 13(14)• 12 step Color Wheel, with shade and tint.
Oct 15• No Class, UF Homecoming
Oct 18(19,20)• Complementary color scale with contrast.
Oct 21(22)• View Art 21: Video and discuss.
Oct 25(26)• Begin Compositional exercises based on Johannes Itten's contrast examples. Create a non-representational, abstract line drawing. Use this drawing to create three paintings with different color schemes that effectively change the contrast, space, energy, and focus of the painting.
